Location
The Village of Petersburg, Nebraska, population 374, is located
in north-central Boone County, approximately 13 miles north of Albion, the Boone
County seat.
History
John Peters, Petersburg's founder, moved to Nebraska
in the 1870s and homesteaded near where present day Petersburg is located.
On June 8, 1887, John Peters dedicated the plat of the original town of
Petersburg to the public.
Basic economic activities include irrigated and dryland farming, raising
and feeding cattle and hogs, manufacturing, trucking, lumber yard, tourism
and retail sales.
Government
Petersburg is governed by a chairman and a board of
trustees which are elected by popular vote for four-year terms.
Emergency Services
Police protection, as well as E-911 service, is provided
locally through the Boone County Sheriff's Department and a sheriff's deputy who
lives in Petersburg. The Nebraska

Fire Protection/Rescue Squad
Petersburg is served by a 31-member volunteer fire department.
The department is equipped with a 250-gallon pickup, a 500-gallon pumper, and
two tanker trucks. Petersburg also has a rescue squad equipped with two emergency
vehicles. Emergency medical and ambulance services are provided to Petersburg
and the rural community by 13 trained technicians and 2 first responders. For

Utilities
Electrical power is supplied by Loup
Power District. Source Gas supplies
the village with natural gas. Petersburg owns and operates its own water
system and currently has two domestic wells with a 50,000-gallon elevated
storage tank. The Village also owns and operates a 40,000 gpd wastewater
treatment plant. A user fee is charged for both water and waste. Residents
pay a contractual service provider for commercial and residential solid
waste collection and disposal. Recyclable newspaper is collected once a
week and there is a designated drop-off area for newspapers during the
month. There is also a grass clipping dump area, a tree pile, and an appliance
collection area.
Housing
There are approximately 170 homes in the community with one new home built in 2008. A senior/low-income housing unit built in 1997, Petersburg
Country Cottages, has a senior low-income, six housing units. For more information on available

Library
The Petersburg Public Library, a handicapped-accessible
facility, is equipped with an Internet-accessible computer. Books, periodicals,
video and audio materials, and software are available for checkout. Publications

Communications
Great Plains Communications provides
Petersburg residents with telephone and cable TV service. Central Plains Satellite, (402) 386-5327, also provides satellite TV
service. The Petersburg Press, a local weekly newspaper, and six
area daily newspapers help the citizens of Petersburg stay informed of
current events. First-class postal service and package delivery service
are available. A Viaero cell phone tower was built in 2006 (north edge of Petersburg) and an Alltel cell phone tower was built in November 2008 (1½ miles east of Petersburg). The area is served by several TV and radio stations.
Transportation
There are approximately 61 blocks of hard-surfaced
streets in the community. Funding from community development block grants
and local funding has provided many new concrete streets. Major highways
that pass through Petersburg are State Highways 14 and 32. The Albion
Airport is 10 miles south and the Neligh Airport is 21 miles
north from Petersburg.
Clubs/Organizations
The Petersburg Community Club holds monthly
meetings and hosts a variety of activities throughout the year including:
carnival days,
appreciation brunch, pumkin chunkin,
santa day,
Christmas lighting contest,
Christmas supper.

The Senior Citizens' organization holds meetings and provides meals Monday
thru Friday on-site or delivered by Meals on Wheels. This self-sufficient
organization has soup suppers and other fundraising events throughout the year
and has scheduled activities in St. John's Center. For
further information, contact Maureen Henn, Manager, at (402) 386-5211. St. John's Quilters also use
the Center several days a week.
